Confidence
Am I doing this right? This is a question most parents are asking today—especially black parents who have so many more options and patterns of rearing children today. There was a time when there was no question as to whether to spank a disobedient child or not. Now parents have to wonder if it is worth a chance in jail to reprimand their child or ask, “Will my baby believe all the hype and think I don't love her because I spanked her?”
If your child is acting up in a department store and you pop their bottom, is it abuse or are you doing your job by teaching your child right from wrong? My daughters says, "Mom, you know you aren't supposed to hit me in public." It was something she heard on TV and only got the part where a parent was arrested for hitting her child in a store. She didn't get the part about the child exerting unacceptable behavior. Nor that it wasn't so much the lady spanking the child as the way she did it.
Don’t lose sight of the reason you are spanking the child in the first place. Be sure the child understands that you aren't spanking them because you don't like them, but that their behavior was the reason. Some people reason that you can talk to a child and get the same point over. This may work for some children, but then what do you do to the child that reasoning doesn't phase? What about the child who goes to the corner for punishment and ends up taking a nap?
When and where does one draw the line in preparing their child for the world and all that it has to offer? Do I let my baby play in dirt and not eat it? Will she understand that it's okay to get dirty doing an honest day's work, but wash it off at the end of the day?
Do I give my child free reign to find her own way anyway she can, or do I take a hand in rearing and give direction? Example: my seven year old daughter wants to pick out her own clothes. I let her have a say in the clothes she will wear, but if it is something that I don't feel is appropriate, then there is no negotiation—I just say no.
We have gotten away from our old morals and values taught to us by our ancestors.
For instance, you never call an adult by their first name. You have to have a handle when you address them (i.e., aunt, uncle, Mr., Mrs., etc). You don't talk back no matter what your parents say to you, even if it don't make sense at the time. It didn't have to make any sense in my time. I only needed to know how the adult wanted the task carried out and when.
It's not wrong to allow your child to develop their mind and be
